According to the book of Exodus, the priestly breastplate worn by the High Priest of the Israelites was adorned with 12 stones. Some historians believe there to be a connection between the 12 stones on the breastplate with the 12 months of the year. This is thought to be the origin of birthstones. Customs, translations and tastes have changed the list of birthstones over the years.
